(Top) The McClure Family
Look who dropped in for The Stonewall Jackson Experience this month! They are Scott, Jolene, Brittany, & Ricki McClure on vacation from Florida, seeing the sights in the Shenandoah Valley. They had a very nice "Night's Delight" walking through the Old Confederate Cemetery to The Clementine Cafe for a delicious dinner, free dessert, and enjoying the evening in the lively Old Town Historic District. The beautiful Skyline Drive, Historic New Market Battlefield Park, and the Shenandoah Caverns were their favorite day trip. A very nice addition to our Stonewall Family!

Did
You Know?
General Robert E.
Lee's Coffin, a true tale from W&L's "Southern Collegian"
April, 1915
In the early
part of October, 1870 a shipment of 3 coffins from
Richmond, shipped via the canals and locks of the James,
Maury & North Rivers arrived in the Shenandoah landing at
Alexander's wharf in Lexington Virginia (about 50 miles
south of the Inn). Soon after they arrived, the Valley
was inundated by a torrential rainy season, probably spawned
by the remnants
of Atlantic hurricanes. During the night of October
9th, flood waters of enormous proportions swept away the
wharf, including the three coffins that had arrived days
earlier.
When General
Lee died on the 12th, not a coffin was to be had anywhere.
Mr. C.M. Coombs, the undertaker, and the community were
distraught at not having one to bury their heroic icon and
beloved friend, who at his death was president of the
Valley's well known and respected Washington University (now
named Washington and Lee). A huge community search was
mounted to find at least one of the three coffins, so that
he could be properly buried.
After hours of
searching, two young men who had served under Lee found one
of the coffins two miles down the river on a small island.
Putting it in their make-shift boat, they quickly hiked it
back to Mr. Coombs, and Lee was laid in it. It was
fortunate that the one coffin recovered was not any shorter
than it was. They had intended to bury General Lee with his
boots on as was the military custom of honor; but the
coffin was too short, it could not be done.
General Lee now
lies in a family crypt within the small very beautiful and
historic Chapel of his beloved University. Trivia question:
Besides Lee's Family, who else is buried there? Send me the
correct answer, and I will send you a Stonewall Jackson
refrigerator magnet...:-).
The correct
answer can be found by visiting the "Special Package" page
under our Reservation button on the Navigation Bar. It will
be part of Wayne's Hot Deal for
August, GET A FREE "NIGHT'S
DELIGHT & BREAKFAST TO REMEMBER", which you will want
to see anyway!
And now you know!
Chapped
Lips? BRING
BLISTEX!! On the plane, this can be invaluable. If your
flight is over 1 hour long, I strongly suggest you make this
tiny tube of lip moisturizer a part of your carry-on bag.
Almost nothing is worse than severe chapped lips in the very
dry environment of the plane. Even if your lips are not
chapped when you take off, the dry recycled air will do the
job quickly! Blistex is tiny, and if you have dry elbows or
heals, it can also be used as a skin moisturizer. It is
shareable, as you can squeeze it on to fingers instead of
lips, and in very desperate situations, it can be put on the
face in small amounts to get rid of that dry, tight feeling.
I hope every one will heed this advice; as a veteran flyer,
it is a small thing that can make a huge difference!

Stonewall Scrambled Eggs We have had many requests for the recipe of how we make our delicious, light scrambled eqqs that we serve with with our French Toast. We will share our secret with you, but you must keep it in the family. Here is Wayne's version made with Tarragon: TRY IT!
Ingredients for two
people:
Preparation:
Break eggs into mixing
bowl, pierce yolks. Turn heat up. When the eggs start to firm on the skillet sides begin and continue to lightly fold turning the firm from the sides and the bottom of the skillet so that all of the wash begins to firm together. Remove from heat quickly when the wash has almost firmed. The eggs should appear wet and lightly covered with liquid at this point. Immediately turn them out of the hot skillet to the warm serving plate and sprinkle lightly with Tarragon. Do not overcook the eggs, they become tough and tasteless. If their is any brown on the eggs...too long!!! The eggs will continue to cook firm after you remove them from the skillet and will retain their flavor and tenderness. Garnish with Tomato or Parsley. Serve with Grain Bread Toast and your favorite jelly or jam...... YUMMY!! (Top) |
